Aerial LiDAR for Oil and Gas Exploration

The oil and gas industry relies on time sensitive data relating to x, y, and z positions of terrain data for exploration programs. Although this positional data can be collected by alternate means, LiDAR surveys provide high-speed data acquisitions and limit ground intervention. In many instances, the time from field survey to final data product delivery can be accomplished within a few weeks, not months.
In environmentally sensitive areas, tree-cutting fees can amount to thousands of dollars/hectare. Using LiDAR as the survey tool, fewer lines need to be cut, fewer trees are felled and exploration companies realize significant savings. Surveys are conducted using fixed-wing or helicopter mounted LiDAR systems, based on the size, terrain and vegetation coverage of the project area.
LiDAR data is acquired, processed and delivered in digital format. This makes it very easy to create data products that meet a wide range of needs. Programs such as AutoCad, ArcView and other similar GIS/CAD programs have the capability to import and export LiDAR data.
